We are seeking individuals who have strong problem solving skills, the ability to repair and operate grass cutting equipment, snow removal/salting equipment, willingness to acquire Class 1 Wastewater treatment certificate, Class 1 Wastewater collection Certificate and Class 1 Water Distribution Certificate, with other additional competencies, like small electrical repair, welding, plumbing is an asset.

POSITION: Public Works Employee I
RESPONSIBLE TO: Maintenance Supervisor
NATURE OF WORK: This is a technical position requiring technical knowledge and hands- on skills to maintain, repair, operate, and service grass cutting and snow removal/salting equipment and other associated pieces of equipment necessary to complete daily job assignments. This position is responsible to the Maintenance Supervisor to ensure that the facilities and equipment (and subsequently added facilities and equipment) are kept clean, functioning efficiently and maintained in accordance with direction from the Maintenance Supervisor and the corporate maintenance program. The Public Works Employee I meets with the Maintenance Supervisor daily to discuss overall Town maintenance and operational matters specific to this position.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- Responsible to the Maintenance Supervisor for quality of work (grass cutting, snow removal and sidewalk maintenance) as well as all costs specific to this operation
- Meets daily with Maintenance Supervisor to discuss overall operations and receive direction
- Inform Maintenance Supervisor of any abnormal condition
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Maintenance of Town buildings, grounds, signs, Town parks and equipment
- Perform heavy moving in the Town
- Performs required services to open and close Town buildings used on a seasonal basis
- Conducts water meter readings in designated areas and records information for submission to the Town Office
- Care and maintenance of Town flowerbeds and other nursery stock as directed
- Maintains a clean presentable environment in the Town Maintenance Building and
Treatment Plants
- Planting and caring for lawns on Town owned property as directed
- In spring/summer/fall ensures all Town owned grass areas are mowed and flower beds maintained and watered as directed
- In fall/winter/spring ensures snow is removed and surfaces sanded or salted for all designated sidewalks and Town parking lots
- Routine preventative maintenance on Town owned equipment
- Routine painting and carpentry jobs
- Routine repair of Town owned buildings
- Cleaning, maintenance of streets and sidewalks and snow removal and salting of sidewalks and Town parking areas
- Garbage bag removal and replacement from Town waste receptacles as directed
- Ensure facilities and equipment described or subsequently added are maintained in accordance with the corporate preventive maintenance program
- Ensure all equipment is in good condition, maintained and operating in a manner consistent with design specifications
- Ensure an inventory of spare parts is maintained and items used are recorded/reported to the Maintenance Supervisor for reorder in order to carry out the corporate preventive maintenance program
- Responsible for compiling of reports, records, charts, etc., necessary to ensure an efficient operation of a preventive maintenance program
- Responsible for compliance of approved safety regulations
- Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and operations on all equipment and facilities in the Maintenance Worker I’s charge
- Carry out repairs on equipment which has malfunctioned
- Maintain records and reports associated with maintenance program in a clear, concise manner
- Work in rotation with others on standby duty, weekend duty, overtime, holidays, etc
- Arrange for outside repair work to be carried out when necessary, in consultation with Maintenance Supervisor
- Advise Maintenance Supervisor when equipment is going to be locked out for maintenance and/or repair
- Participate with Maintenance Supervisor in carrying out scheduled inspections of facilities and equipment
- Fabricate and make any welding repairs, taking into consideration limitations of the shop
- Make all electrical repairs within scope of ability
- Operate equipment as required
- Work safely adhering to all OH&S regulations
- Perform any other duties, responsibilities and/or functions as may be assigned by Management
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
- Thorough knowledge of principles, legislation, legal requirements, and best practices within the water and sewer, building and sidewalk, grass cutting/snow removal and associated disciplines
- Strong organizational, and conflict-resolution skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduation
- Willingness to acquire Class I Wastewater Treatment Certificate
- Willingness to acquire Class I Wastewater Collection Certificate
- Willingness to acquire Class I Water Distribution Certificate
- Willingness to acquire certifications necessary to assume the role of Maintenance Worker I
- Demonstrated experience in the operation of hand tools
- Physically capable to perform the duties of maintenance Worker I
- Demonstrated experience in the operation of lawn mowing equipment, sidewalk maintenance equipment, snow removal equipment, tractors and other equipment owned by the Town
- Must be in possession of a valid driver’s license
