Purpose of Position:
To provide a supportive daily living environment for the residents of the Safe House. To provide and maintain a safe supportive atmosphere in a residential setting that is both culturally open and accessible to all youths. To support the development of street involved youth, whose family, are either unavailable or unable to meet the youth’s needs. The Youth Care Worker position reports to the Youth Safe House Coordinator.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Human Services Diploma/ Relevant Experience
- Ability to use initiative and function independently
- Criminal Record Check required upon employment
Additional Desirable Certificates/Qualifications: * First Aid
- Valid Class IV BC Driver’s License
- FoodSafe
Key Responsibility Areas: * Direct service support to resident
- Establish a trusting, non-judgemental, non-exploitive rapport with youth
- Ensure that each youth is empowered through their own participation in planning for their immediate and long term needs
- Assist youth to assess their needs and to begin to meet these defined needs in a manner, which will assist the transition to a healthier lifestyle
- Work with families of youth, as needed, to encourage resolution of issues, regardless of future placement
- Respond to suicide Crisis Intervention need
- Provide information regarding services and opportunities available to you and actively promote client involvement in the community
- Escort youth to community services when appropriate
- Educate clients with regard to safe health practices (distribution of condoms, HIV/AIDS information) life skills, conflict resolution and community resources
- Respect and assure residents of confidentiality in the community and with other service professionals
- Monitor and ensure that the youth’s needs, such as hygiene, medical and dental care are provided for
- Provide a positive, safe and structured environment
- Assume the responsibility of supervising the residents in their day- to- day living
- Maintain the day-to-day operation of the house, including chopping, meal preparation, cleaning and maintenance
- Fulfill safety requirements, ie: room checks, security checks, bed checks, sharps counts, etc
- Participate in the planning and implementation of treatment goals for all youth in the program, under the direction of the Coordinator and/or Management Team
- Re-direct non-client group to appropriate services

Salary: $20.00 per hour

- Nanaimo, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
