Indigenous Family Support Worker:
Function: The IFS Worker will work in the standards, philosophy and mission statement of the Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre, and will be under the supervision and direction of the Management Team. The FSW will be responsible for providing support to Aboriginal families assuring that the children’s well-being and social support are seen to. The incumbent will also work with the organization team providing an integrated service to the target population.
Roles and Responsibilities: The Family Support Worker will provide counselling, parenting support, intervention and advocacy services and co-ordination of resources and development of community support to clients referred by the Ministry for Children and Families and other services in the community.
Duties Include: Accept referrals from the Ministry for Children and Families, and other services in the Nanaimo community. To provide counselling support to the families on an individual basis, setting goals and treatment plan for the families and children, assuring the families are following plans directed by the Ministry for Children and Families. To implement family support plans in cooperation with the Ministry for Children and Families Social Workers, Health Centre services, families and other service providers in the community. To provide assistance in developing child management and other necessary parenting skills that would support the families “plan”. To empower the families to make change that will benefit their life and act as an advocate for the families and children by connecting to the supports in the community, inclusive to extended family, community and resources. Provide a referral service connecting the families to other services in the community and to conduct referral follow-ups. To support the families by participating in family case conferences, family meetings, court and court case conferencing. To participate in developing prevention programs and by providing group programs that will support the families in maintaining a “Healthy Family” environment. To provide a vehicle connecting the families to their Aboriginal culture and tradition, which will support the parenting skills. To connect with walk-in clients, providing intake assessment and acting as a referral services to clients needing family support. Facilitate groups as appropriate. Other: The IIFS Worker may be asked to provide other responsibilities that will support the Aboriginal families healing and that will support the organization’s initiative, as directed by your Supervisor.
