Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) is a not-for-profit organization located in the Downtown Eastside community for over 30 years. VAHS programs are designed by and for urban Aboriginal people to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Our services include a Primary Care Clinic, a Dental Clinic, a cultural team of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous Early Years programs.
ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Cultural Coordinator oversees all activities of the Our Circle is Strong (OCIS) cultural program, connecting a team of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers with community members and clients from other VAHS services. Their responsibilities include the planning, coordination, administration, and supervision of the program. The Cultural Coordinator supports program staff and monitors service delivery for structure, consistency, quality, and effectiveness to obtain the program’s objectives.
VAHS is seeking an interim Cultural Coordinator for a term of six (6) months, with the possibility of an extension. This is a Full Time position (40 hours/week) with the hours generally being from 8:30 to 4:30, Monday to Friday. Duties are performed on-site at 449 East Hastings with some flexibility for remote work. This is a BCGEU-certified Union position with a starting wage of $30.00/hour.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Cultural Coordinator reports to the Executive Director. Elders and Knowledge Keepers attached to the program will report to the Cultural Coordinator.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans and develops the program, including regular activities and special events
- Oversees day-to-day program operations by ensuring that staff are scheduled according to requirements, policies are adhered to, and program objectives are met
- Supervises program staff by assigning work and providing feedback on performance
- Assists program staff with preparing for client appointments, workshops, and other activities
- Supports the referral process of clients from other VAHS programs
- Organizes and chairs weekly program meetings; coordinates staff development opportunities
- Monitors and authorizes program expenditures
- Produces promotional materials and resources related to the program
- Maintains related records and statistics, producing reports as required
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of three (3) years’ work experience of program delivery within a not-for-profit, social services, and/or Indigenous community setting
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, current issues, and support services
- Connections to Indigenous service providers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other community leaders in the Vancouver area is a strong asset
- Education or other training in a relevant field is an asset
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong understanding of the principles and practices of cultural safety, equity, and Indigenous ways of knowing and being
- Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to teach, coach, and mentor all levels of care providers
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including active listening, team building, and meeting facilitation
- Able to effectively manage time, problem solve, and meet multiple/unexpected demands
- Able to deal with a variety of situations and responsibilities requiring initiative, creativity, empathy, and professional judgment
- Able to work independently and to collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Able to maintain confidentiality, commit to professional standards and ethics, and adhere to policies and procedures
- Able to effectively use the Internet, electronic filing systems, and Microsoft Office programs
- A valid BC driver’s license is an asset
